Peaches

One of the things I miss about the South is fresh Georgia and South Carolina peaches, but believe it or not, New Jersey has some really good peaches too!  You can find quite a few pick-your-own farms around the state, which keep New Jersey earning the title of the Garden State year after year.  While we didn’t get to head to the farm this weekend, we did the next best thing and picked up some beautiful examples of Jersey fresh peaches at our local farmer’s market and a roadside stand out in Sussex County where we were enjoying the day at the Sussex County Sunflower Maze.   They were so sweet and juicy I could have eaten them all one by one, but we decided to grill some up for dessert at our Labor Day get-together.  I didn’t even get to catch a picture of them before they were G-O-N-E gone!

Ingredients

6 firm ripe peaches cut in half and pits removed

1/2 cup light brown sugar

3/4 tsp cinnamon

3/4 – 1 cup caramel sauce, warmed

Vanilla ice cream

Fresh whipped cream

Instructions

Preheat grill to medium heat.

Place the peaches on a platter or cookie sheet, cut side up.  Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon and let sit for 10 minutes.

Prepare whipped cream.  I have an ISI cream whipper, so its just a matter of a 1/2 pint of whipping cream, a tablespoon of powdered sugar and a few drops of vanilla.  Give it a quick stir, add the little nitrous canister and done!  If you don’t have as ISI whipper, or prefer to make it by hand, have at it!  Let the kids lick the beaters!  I suppose you could also use canned whipped cream in a pinch, but I find it to be a lot sweeter and once you go ISI it is really hard to go back to the canned stuff.

Warm the caramel sauce in the microwave for 30-45 seconds until smooth and warm.

Place the peaches on the hot grill cut side down and cook over medium heat for 4-5 minutes.  Turn them over and grill the peaches for another 4-5 minutes till they are tender and slightly caramelized with nice grill marks.

Transfer the hot peaches into serving bowls and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  Drizzle with some caramel sauce and top with some fresh whipped cream!
