Mascara is one of those makeup items I don’t believe you need to spend a lot of money on.  There are a lot of good affordable options that perform as well, if not better, than high-end products.  So needless to say, I was a bit surprised when I looked at my current collection and selected only one drugstore mascara for the top five and it’s the one I am currently reaching for every morning, but not always on it’s own.  See, it’s kind of like that scene in Shrek when he’s trying to explain that ogres are like onions…because they’ve got layers!  I love to layer mascaras… A good base coat of something that lengthens and defines, but doesn’t volumize too much, topped off with a high volume mascara, and Jane is a happy girl!  To be perfectly honest my go to duo right now is the L’Oréal Telescopic Mascara in Carbon Black layered under the L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black, but only one of those two made the top five as a standout product and that’s because I can look at the CoverGirl Supersizer and it is equally as good as the Telescopic.  Likewise for the L’Oréal Butterfly Sculpt.  They’re all solid drugstore options with a silicone brush that separates and defines without adding too much bulk.  So what are the current standouts you ask?  Here they are:

Benefit They’re Real Mascara:  This is a solid “natural” looking Mascara.  Perfect for everyday or on weekends when you’re going for a “no makeup” look.  Yes, it builds too, which makes it very packable.  For a non waterproof variety it also holds up really well throughout the day, which wins big brownie points in my book, since most regular mascaras leave me looking like I cried my way through a Lifetime holiday movie marathon over my lunch break!

L’Oréal Voluminous in Carbon Black:  My current affordable fave!  This is a go anywhere, do anything and look gorgeous doing it mascara. It layers beautifully for an extra stunning effect, but it can hold its own too.  It is the most beautiful, non-clumpy, black as night, traditional bristle wand mascara and I find myself reaching for it all the time now that I’ve transitioned to fall’s smoky eyes and rich autumn shades.  I love how black this shade is!

Tarte Lights Camera Flashes(or Splashes):  I would say this one is very close in formula to the L’Oréal Voluminous.  Lights Camera Splashes has been a summer staple in my makeup bag for at least two years, if not longer.  The non waterproof variety is equally as good.  It’s just a great buildable take it with you on vacation, I can do anything you can do better kind of product.  The brush is just right, it gives volume without looking like a tarantula took up residency on your eyelids, because let’s face it, that look just doesn’t work for anyone outside of the editorial pages of our favorite fashion mags.

Bobbi Brown Intensifying Long-Wear Mascara:  This is, and has been, my absolute favorite mascara for creating that feathery every lash has been found look, which then I usually vamp up with something more volumizing over the top.  However, the brush is so petite on this mascara that it also wins best in show for lower lashes!  Just gorgeous!

Lancôme Hypnose Drama:  Did you read that name all the way through to the end?  Hello Drama!  Love love love this mascara for nights out and really dramatic eye looks.  It just screams party more than champagne and clock cookies.  It can get a bit spidery f you’re not careful, but it’s so beautiful when done correctly, it demands attention.
